Various job responsibilities for running the umpire program:
UIC (Year Round)
- Provides oversight, support, and final adjudication of rules interpretations
- Support coaches meetings in late Feb (3rd week or so) and
invite umpires. Emphasize mentor umpire
program and new training materials (if obtained).
- Schedule umpires meeting for mid-March (or when schedule is ready)
- All coaches must volunteer at least 2 times outside their own games.
- The league will not be responsible for supplying umpires for make-up
games.
- Umpires may ump their children’s game if they ask prior. This allows all parties to acknowledge the
conflict of interest.
- See who will mentor newbies and who needs a mentor
Recruiting (January)
- Setup and messages
- Request past umpires attend registration to sign the volunteer forms
- Update umpire brochures with all key information
- Attend or get help at all registration events
- Get emails of Mgrs/Coaches/Umps, Jrs & Srs.
- Make up a flyer for posting at the two sites.
- Send note to CHS coaches and to CBK about recruiting.
- Must have background check forms.
Training (March)
- Make sure to highlight “No On Deck Batter” rule and Mgrs must
be in their dugouts while team is at bat (can’t hover outside).
- MANDATORY 2 games per manager/coach, no exceptions.
- Set dates for training: Basics of Umpiring Presentation and videos.
- CLL will pay for 2 individuals per year to attend the week-long training
in Williamsport.
- Do we have sufficient copies of any training materials?
- Contact District umpires for assistance.
Rules (March plus Updates)
- Rules and Fine Points Clinic:
Saturday, April 11 from 1 to 2:30pm, Woodland fields
- Review and update local ground rules
- Review cross-league ground rules
- Review changes for LL for new year
- New eRules disk has great embedded videos to help learn the rules.
- Review the standard set of ground rules with all umpires.
Equipment/Uniforms/Facilities (February)
- How many shirts are needed and in what sizes?
- Order CLL Umpire red shirts.
- Umpire locker cabinets organized?
- Equipment inventory and ordering
- Provide the new umpires with a short list of equipment that they need to
own for umpiring
Scheduling (Season + Districts)
- Online Scheduling
- Online schedule is the master
- Get schedule information loaded in March
- Hold an umpire scheduling night after schedule is set
- Get draft schedule early and start recruiting umpires in March for April
dates, even if game details aren’t known
- Once the first 2 weeks of games are known, date-wise, umps
can sign up.
Website (Light – January-March)
- Maintain website with updates and new material
Email Management (Mainly Season)
- Distribute messages to appropriate team members
